Bursting forth from Canada’s capital, native Producer and DJ crew A Tribe Called Red is making an impact on the global electronic scene with a truly unique sound.

If you’re an indigenous person living in a country that was forcefully colonized, it’s all too common to find yourself underrepresented and misrepresented if not blatantly and systematically devalued and attacked. Positive role models and a positive self-identity are hard to come by, yet the Canadian DJ collective A Tribe Called Red is a modern gateway into urban and contemporary indigenous culture and experience, celebrating all its layers and complexity.

Looking to the future, without losing sight of their past, ATCR straddles a broad range of musical influences based in modern hip-hop, traditional pow wow drums and vocals, blended with edgy electronic music production styles. Currently made up of DJ NDN, Bear Witness and 2oolman, ATCR first got together in 2008. They are part of a vital new generation of artists making a cultural and social impact in Canada alongside a renewed Aboriginal rights movement called Idle No More.

ATCR’s uplifting and inclusive Electric Pow Wow nights on the second Saturday of every month have become an institution at Ottawa’s Club Babylon. There and at their shows, a crowd of Aboriginal Canadians (which includes First Nations people, Métis, Inuit, and 631 other nations) mix with social activists, music heads and anyone looking for a great party and a safe space to come together. They pack the dance floor as Bear Witness weaves indigenous stereotyping from movies, cartoons and media into a new political context and a dancer mixes b-boy and traditional moves.

Through the group’s positivity and tireless work ethic their message has expanded to global proportions with tours in Australia, Europe, Mexico and the United States.

It’s no accident that Native American activist, poet and musician John Trudell is the first voice you hear on the collective’s third album, We Are The Halluci Nation, as the group considers him a forefather for this movement. The album includes a number of other connections as well, ranging from hip-hop star Yasiin Bey (AKA Mos Def) or Saul Williams to Colombian visual artist and musician Lido Pimienta to native musicians Black Bear, Tanya Tagaq to the Australian aboriginal band OKA or the Swedish-Sami singer Maxida Marak.

The crew has performed high profile festival dates at Coachella, Bonnaroo, AfroPunk, Osheaga, and New Orleans Jazz Fest to list a few. In 2014, they garnered mainstream recognition when the band became the first Indigenous group to win the Breakthrough Group of the Year award at the Juno Awards (Canada’s Grammys). ATCR was also long-listed for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize in 2012 and 2013 and its debut album was included in the Washington Post’s top 10 albums of that same year.

A Tribe Called Red promotes inclusivity, empathy and acceptance amongst all races and genders in the name of social justice. They believe that indigenous people need to define their identity on their own terms. If you share this vision, then you are already part of the Halluci Nation.

Originaires d’Ottawa, les producteurs et DJ autochtones (Cayuga et Odjibwe) d’A Tribe Called Red créent un son véritablement unique qui a l’effet d’une bombe sur la scène électronique et la culture club mondiale.

Si vous êtes une personne autochtone et que vous vivez dans un pays colonisé par la force, vous vous voyez trop fréquemment sous-représenté ou mal représenté, voire carrément, systématiquement dévalorisé et attaqué. Il est difficile de se trouver des modèles positifs et de se forger une identité positive. C’est dans ce contexte qu’a émergé le collectif de DJ canadien A Tribe Called Red, une porte d’entrée moderne vers la culture et le vécu autochtones contemporains qui en célèbre toutes les facettes et toute la complexité.

Tourné vers l’avenir, sans perdre de vue son passé, ATCR chevauche un large éventail d’influences musicales qui trouvent leurs bases dans le hip-hop moderne et les percussions et chants traditionnels des fêtes pow-wow, croisées à une production électronique d’avant-garde de styles variés. ATCR, qui réunit DJ NDN, Bear Witness et 2oolman, a d’abord été créé en 2008. Le groupe fait partie d’une nouvelle génération d’artistes qui, aux côtés d’Idle No More, un mouvement renouvelé de défense des droits autochtones, ont un fort impact culturel et social au Canada.

Au club et à leurs concerts, une foule de Canadiens autochtones (terme englobant les peuples des Premières Nations, les Métis, les Inuits et 631 autres nations) se mêle aux militants de causes sociales, aux passionnés de musique et à tous ceux qui cherchent une fête géniale et un lieu sûr où se rassembler. Tout le monde s’entasse sur la piste pendant que Bear Witness projette des images de stéréotypes autochtones tirées de films, de dessins animés et autres média dans un nouveau contexte politique et que des danseurs autochtones mélangent les styles b-boy et traditionnel.

Grâce à l’esprit positif du groupe et à son éthique de travail soutenue, son message s’est propagé à l’échelle mondiale et l’a emmené en tournée en Australie, en Europe, au Mexique et aux États-Unis.

Ce n’est pas un hasard si la voix du militant, poète et musicien autochtone John Trudell est la première qu’on entende sur We Are The Halluci Nation, troisième opus du groupe — ATCR le considère comme l’ancêtre de ce mouvement. De nombreuses collaborations ponctuent l’album : la star hip-hop Yasiin Bey (anciennement Mos Def), Saul Williams, l’artiste visuelle et musicienne colombienne Lido Pimienta, les musiciens autochtones de Black Bear, Tanya Tagaq, le groupe aborigène australien OKA, ainsi que la chanteuse suédoise samie Maxida Marak.

Le collectif s’est produit sur des festivals nord-américains de premier plan tel que Coachella, Bonnaroo, AfroPunk, Osheaga et au festival de jazz de La Nouvelle-Orléans, pour ne nommer que ceux-là. En 2014, ATCR s’est fait connaitre du grand public en devenant le premier groupe autochtone à remporter le prix de la Découverte de l’année au gala des Juno (Victoires de la Musique canadiens).Il a aussi figuré sur la longue liste du prestigieux prix de la musique Polaris en 2012 et 2013. Également en 2013, son premier album s’est classé dans le top 10 des meilleurs albums du Washington Post.

 A Tribe Called Red encourage l’inclusion, l’empathie et l’acceptation mutuelle entre toutes les races et identités sexuelles au nom de la justice sociale. Ses membres croient qu’il revient aux personnes autochtones de définir leur identité, et ce, d’après leurs propres critères.
